For my pattern I was focused on using nature elements, in a kinda creepy way. I did a Death's Head Hawkmoth, a dark rose, a dying leave and a white poppy for my icons. I picked them for their symbolism for death, eternal sleep, misfortune, etc.. As far as making the icons, I mainly used the pen tool with lots of textures and clipping masks. Overall I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out.
Your color palette is definitely creepy and nicely revolves around the moth. This looks like it belongs on album art or something similar, because I can't see someone using this as wrapping paper. It definitely needs to be printed on paper. Great detailing on the moth, too.
This is a really fantastic group of patterns. I really appreciate the time you put into this project and it shows that you really cared for the design. I especially like that you considered the color palette. It's very fitting, really rich, and a great choice. I also think that the way you used your color in the pattern is perfect. It's nice to see each individual color spread evenly on the pattern - you did a great job with spacing as well. I like also seeing the presentation of them all together and think this is a really professional piece (the collection together) and think you should totally consider doing more patterns! The only other thing I think you could do is maybe show a bit more of the pattern in the main pattern swatch - I know why you didn't -- because the detail would get lost... but since you have th big rose and moth up top, I think you could add a bit more pattern in the repeating one so people can see how it flows. Hopefully if this was printed at real scale you would see the details!
Last thing - since this is really cool --- maybe if you have time to go back and add some kind of other element to the things up a the top -- whether it was just a piece of type... or something... or a phrase... I think it would completely make this 100% an awesome portfolio page!
These have a beautiful vintage aesthetic that really works well with your delicately crafted icons. The first one is very classy and well executed--no striping or tracking to complain of and the subdued palette with just a hint of minimal contrast is gorgeous. The pop of deep red to break up the repetition in the dark greenish browns and beige is very pleasing to admire. There is so much going on in the top pattern however, the thin stripes on the second one is a bit harsh in comparison, and I wish there was more room for the eye to rest with the complexity of your main piece. Stripes can be hard to pull off without becoming overwhelming. Even so, these are lovely.
I really like your patterns because I can find in it a mixture of old and new. The butterfly is really well drawn. The rose looks so real, but what I like the most is the leaf! You did a great job with the texture of this small object. Good job!
Well done! I was actually thinking of putting the deaths head moth into my pattern as well! This is super well done. The textures on your icons almost give them a tattoo like quality which I really admire. Your color pallet is also beautiful!
I think making different photo collages might be a cool way to play with the presentation of your pattern, I really don't think you should change anything else than that because your icons work so well together and standing on their own.
Wow! These patterns are very beautiful. The creation of your icons were done so well and give off a really elegant vibe. The color palette as well as the icons definitely created the creepy vibe and everything feels very cohesive as a whole!
I love your icons- the rose is fantastic, but I feel pulled back to the Deaths Head Moth every time because I think of Silence of the Lambs whenever I look at it- something very appropriate for a spooky pattern. My only real voice of concern however lies in (some) of the color choice, because the moth winds up competing with some of the other similarly colored leaves and petals when he should be popping out at the viewer. That and the pattern itself is a little typical- but the strength of your piece is definitely in the icons. Very well done.
