Spooky snacks

I found out last minute that I could use color on my spooky foods so I may go back and play with the colors a lot more!

  1. I really dig the theme as a connector in the series rather than a similar type of food (and its so appropriate too)! Your illustrations have some great flats going on but I think playing around with light and overlays could give them some more depth. On another note, the linework in the wood grain is super and the attention to detail really shows!

  2. i love all your little spooky food! my favorite is the cakepop/lollipop one, because i think your sense of line work shows a little more. I'd be interested to see this if you had more time to consider color. I think some of these, specifically the 3rd one (spaghetti monster thing) could be drastically improved just by cleaning up some of the lines and blocks of color. You have a really cool loose style, which lends itself to this subject matter, and I think you could really emphasize that and make it look really concrete if the linework itself was a little cleaner.

  3. I love the concepts of all of these, and the linework you did in the sticks of the lollipops is awesome, it's super successful. There are a few areas that would benefit from cleaning up, like where the plate meets the table in the spaghetti one, but other than that I think the looseness remains consistent.

  4. I really like how you created Halloween snacks when its a day away to Halloween! All of the foods are very spooky and are definitely what we would see during this time. I think it might be fun to play with the lights and shadows along with blending layers to help emphasize your set! In any case nice work!

  5. I really like your concept. i think the color could be rethought to look more cohesive. another thing is that i would like to see the last 2 grounded a bit better like the first ones instead of having them just float in white space. the linework is pretty good especially on the popsicle sticks

  6. That's pretty neat idea to give the food a bit more characterization. I think what would help with these is that when laying down shading, use the eraser tool to pull back details instead of drawing on top of it with another color. Doing it the other way causes a weird bit of muddyness.

  7. Topical food illustration! So good! You have some really fun designs that really bounce! The softer colors though seem to halt my excitement. I'd love to see some stronger saturation to really kick the viewer's excitement and delight into high gear. Or perhaps make them look even G R O S S E R !!!

  8. Anne! I'm not sure how I didn't comment on these! I must have totally spaced that week -- I'm really sorry! I wanted to give you some comments! These are super fun! I love that you've combined some super gross themes with really tasty foods. I think the only one that is kind of different than the others is the spaghetti = mostly because the rest seem like sweets or deserts. I think that the way you're painting the little dudes on the pretzels is awesome - love the detail and the linework there. I think that there are some nice textures in the coffee / donut one that you could use in future work. too. But for whatever reason, I think that really tiny linework in the pretzels is awesome-- probably because it shows really nice brush control. I think it would be awesome to continue that in some of the other areas of the other drawings to make them all feel a bit more like they go together, detail wise. It's a really funny series.
