My pattern followed an urban theme, with the main pattern consisting of stylized trash and the complimentary pattern consisting of high rise buildings. I wanted to go for more of a run down, grungy Hong Kong high rise look in the city pattern, but unfortunately due to time restraints and trying to work within the program it came out a little more sterile and cartoony than I would have liked. I also wanted to make the trash one a little more grungy, but I kind of like the way it came out anyway.
Despite the little hiccups, I think they both came out relatively well individually. I'm not sure how well they work together, and I'm also not sure about the color I used for the purple one. In the city one, there is a strange layering error that I'm trying to get figured out (if you didn't hear me grunting for the first half of class)and I may go back and add color to it at some point.

this is super cool, i love the garbage patterns. those buildings must have taken forever but they turned out super cool. it could have looked nice to have an accent color somewhere in the buildings but whatever. nice work
ReplyDeleteThe detail in your first pattern came out really well with the purple as a background - it works with white as well, but having that color really brings out the garbage. Your city pattern is pretty fantastic too, though I have some trouble connecting the two since it's so clean cut compared to your first pattern. I think adding some color, like James said, would help it a lot.
ReplyDeleteWow. Super rad and detailed. Yeah, it is interesting that the garbage is rendered so differently from the buildings. I wonder if having the garbage a little bit more stylized, or geometric would lend better to the second pattern?
ReplyDeleteThat first pattern reminds me of a lot of 90s cartoon patterns, probably because of the subject matter, but also because of the matte coloring. I really like the style of it, especially the chip bag. It's too bad the city pattern didn't work out though. It was off to a great start.
ReplyDeleteThe trash pattern with the purple pattern is the best! The background really compliments the use of pink in the icons, and there isn't any streaking or anything that catches my eye too much. I can completely understand having problems with the city one, as it looks like a very complex piece, but it's still a very solid pattern as is.
ReplyDeleteThis looks awesome. My eyes move throughout the whole image, the first pattern, instead of focusing on just one thing or space. The city scape looks really intricate and clean, good job. I don't mind that there's no color, I feel like it has enough different shapes and angles to keep it interesting enough.
ReplyDeleteNice placement on these! You did a great job avoiding striping and balancing out your more saturated elements with subdued ones. These are all laid out very well and it's awesome that you managed to get that overlaying in the last one done so cleanly. A couple lines do tend to float off onto another building, but that can be fixed quickly.
ReplyDeleteCALVIN THIS IS SO GOOD. ugh, like I have nothing to say, how dare u.
ReplyDeleteI like your patterns. You were able to create a cool work with just some simple lines and few colors.
ReplyDeleteok your city pattern is actually so good. It's incredible how detailed you got it, and nothing looks repeated because the pattern is so dynamic. I think adding color (eventually, I know its a long process) even just different colors in the line work will make it come across more how you intended. Also I like the way your patterns go together. The first patterns color palette reminds me of Rugrats (good thing??)
ReplyDeleteThese are all very amazing. I really enjoy the first two and your use of color in them both and as for the city one its so complex and nice. You did a very good job laying our your icons as they all feel very cohesive together. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I'm super excited for you! You did an awesome job on both the spacing and the repeat! I really like all of these patterns = you really thought a lot about the way that the pattern was put together. Both the toss patterns and the Toiles look really professional. One thing I think you could do to make them even stronger is to see if there's a way to integrate one more "Straw" shape in the line of chip bags on the toss patterns - there is just one area where there is a tiny stripe created that cuts across the center of the pattern - where there are no straws -- see what I mean? Maybe if you were able to add a straw there, it would cut up the line. I think the cityscape looks fantastic! It has the right amount of detail in all areas, and has a really nice, even texture. You did an awesome job on these!
ReplyDeleteThe last thing I'd do is put them in the format we talked about in class (with the color chips, and the coordinate patterns) -- or, at least just the color chips! I think it would be awesome to see the cityscape in a reverse - white lines on black! Or white on color!
