Here's my landscape (I've been jokingly calling a Magical Realm for awhile now) ! I went for the idea of spectral, and this image really took an evolution. Once upon a time it was supposed to be the creepy sunken city of Ry'leh from Call of Cthulhu, so it was supposed to be underwater with creepy squid statues everywhere. The city was described as having nonsensical Euclidean geometry- so what I had attempted at first to make an inverted MC-Escher'esque labyrinth of structures wound up becoming a worm's eye view of a cityscape. It's supposed to be a city that's been abandoned and overtaken with foilage, but I had a hard time explicitly communicating that so I tried using color and lighting to communicate that. I tried throwing vines in too but they looked terrible. And finally, I added my spectral guest into the cityscape! It was simple and subtle, but I think it REALLY made an impact.
If it hasn't become apparent, I went insane with the gradient/transparency tools. Most everything else I used was just the Line and Pen tools. I'd give you a more in detail analysis, but I think the WIPs explain the process.

Oh and then there's these boring ones from class too. I guess I was shooting for Bikini Bottom on acid or something. The first is mid-day, the second is dusk, the last is... Maybe a portal to hell opening up, I'm not sure.

  1. Whoa, the linework in your in-progress shots are crazy intricate. That's amazing that you had such a clear vision of what you wanted to execute! The color is unexpected, and awesomely so. Love, love that subtle red highlight shining onto the objects from outside of the frame, it adds a lot of mood and depth. I looked at this a few times before I even realized the giant in the background!! It's such a nice touch that I wish he stood out from the salmon sky a bit more. Overall, this is really awesome, and it's nice seeing your progress as the composition develops.

  2. gdu Carl and your newfangled game references. The WIPs look complicated, but you pulled this off pretty fantastically! The use of color and a palette to work are really what make this so cohesive. Lovin' the dark vines bringing the eye upwards. Also, I appreciate Bikini Bottom on acid much more than you imagined.

  3. These are really nice Carl! Your color choices are always really fun and interesting and it's nice seeing them in a landscape form. I really enjoy looking at your work in progress as its nice to see the progression from when you started and your end product! Your use of subtle lighting was done really nicely too!
