Here are some breakfast pastries that I would like to have the time to bake...
Anyway, I wasn't really feeling this assignment, which is a first for this class, even though I really liked the subject matter. I think what the hang up was the linework requirement and the way we were shown how to shade. I just couldn't really get the hang of it.
These are super simplistic, the colors definitely go well with each other. i think some of the outlines could have been a bit thinner. i also think that you should have changed up the composition throughout the illustrations. you just have them all viewed from the same angle and they are all on a napkin.
ReplyDeleteI think you handled the colors and linework pretty well actually. I think the only thing that stands out to me is the color of the dotty texture in the first bread-like pastry. Because of the color of those dots, it kind of makes it look like mold, i think changing that color to a darker shade of that yellow/cream color would fix that, so that it's more subtle, just right now it kind of has a greenish tint against the yellow.
ReplyDeleteI love the soft gradation of light in your second illustration. That one detail actually separates it from the other two in terms of depth. I would try to mimic that same transition to bring out the flats. Solid color choice!
ReplyDeleteNice, small, and simple. Everything is pretty cohesive and the color scheme is calm and inviting. Like the others have mentioned, the bold texture on the interior of the bread stands out in all the wrong ways- turning down the opacity and giving the spots a brownish hue would solve a lot of problems. Other than that, these are a nice set of compositions.
ReplyDeleteLiking your simple streamlined designs. The third is really visually bold and would work great as an avatar. The second is a bit less solidly composed. I also think that the color palette could be given a bit more of a punch so read a bit stronger. You did solid though for not digging the assignment.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy how light and simplistic these breakfast pastries feel. Your soothing color palette clearly reflects the tone you were going for. The cinnamon bun is my personal favorite! It might be fun to add a little bit more light and shadow to the first and third one so that is resembles the lighting in the second one. Either way good job!
ReplyDeletei like the that you changed the color of the line work. i really compliments the soft textures and colors that these pastries have.
ReplyDeleteSean! I'm not sure how I didn't comment on this one! I wanted to make sure that I got you some feedback! Here goes! It's funny seeing this one compared to some of your vector work - I think that it's easy to see why you weren't into this project - mainly because in the past you've had a really good handle on simple forms. It might not be as easy / interesting for you to work with just the line work and simple color fills if you prefer vectors? Maybe it's just a preference --- either way! I think these are simple and iconic. Where's the fourth one? Maybe I'll find it in the mix! One thing that could probably make it a lot more fun / interesting is allowing yourself to use a brush that has a bit more dynamic pressure to it. It looks like you might be using a brush that has little - to -no pressure sensitivity? Were you using a tablet? If so, it might be good to see if you could go into the brush settings and turn on the pressure function so that you could play with textural linework. My best suggestion for a project like this is to take the linework method as more of a guideline and see what you can do by adding the kinds of textures that you might find more interesting, maybe playing with some of the brushes that would let you personalize the elements more to what you are interested in -- maybe even seeing if you can stylistically replicate some of the textures of the breads /pastries. I think Kyle T Webster might have some brushes like the Xerox brushes, or the sponge brush that might be a lot more fun, and still have the pressure function that you could play with! The colors are nice and cheery -- and they fit as a series regardless!
