So in the process I forgot a few of the techniques shown in class, such as the way to just recolor lines. If I had more time with these I definitely would've cleaned them up more and add shading to the ones that I didn't quite get to. I wanted to do sushi because it allows some great color palettes, and I started drawing them disintegrating when Lindsey mentioned breaking the food apart into its separate parts, and that kind of led into this sushi falling and exploding everywhere idea.
I love how graphic this is. The lines look great and there's a lot of movement in each piece. The colors look great and work together well. I wish there were more shadows, it looks like some food in the images have shadows and others do not. I'd try to keep that consistent.
Whoa! Calvin this is really cool. I really enjoy your use of color and the sheer detail that you've done in the sushi. I really like the energy in these illustrations. The use of movement was done nicely. It feels a lot like Action Sushi! or something. Anywho nice work!
All your colors blend really well in this, I'm impressed. Your use of detail with your line work is super well organized. Also I think using spots of color behind your more simple illustrations was a really nice touch to put on this.
These are neat-o Calvin and some of the best work you've turned in for this class! I love how you gave these sushi guys such action and motion when we normally think of them as a very static and compartmentalized food. The only one that looks out of place is the last one, which lacks the action packed quality of the others.
your sense of color is really great in these, as well as your compositions. All of these are super interesting and your linework works really well with the motion youve given them. I also like how you played with the backgrounds differently in each one.
I friggin' love how frenetic you made sushi- 99% of any image of sushi I've ever looked at is just sushi sitting there being sushi. Here they look so volatile and chaotic, but tasty all the same. It all comes down to the linework- you have such decisive and angled lines to your drawings- everything seems so etched, chiseled and in motion. I think the only thing that's dissonant in the images are the colors- they all work great within their own illustrations, but there isn't much consistency between them as a set. I think tweaking that will go a long way to tethering them together. But all in all, kickass.
I'm so glad you didn't draw sushi just being sushi because it's been done so many times and I really appreciate the dynamism you have going on here. Though they're just food illustrations, its actually reminiscent of your usual linework and seeing that applied here is fantastic. I think one way you could make these stronger is pushing the lights and shadows with some of the same colors in your palette - simple instances like adding a overlay grain of yellow over green to suggest a light source can really make the depth of the entire piece so much more noticeable. Overall, solid work dude.
These turned out fantastic. I was originally going to do sushi in a similar way for the same reason (the varying color palettes). Your style of drawing easily describes movement and energy and that what is so great about these illustrations. That first one is my favorite, even though it doesn't have as much shading as the rest. I think these could be improved by slightly cleaning up the line work.
the sushi has a ton of movement in them. these are bold and graphic and simply amazing i wish you play with values more.i think i will add more variety to the different ingredients in the sushi.
Calvin! I just wanted to write about these! I'm not sure how I didn't leave a comment before, but these are really nice. I love how dymanic the sushi pieces are - it's a great series -- not only because you've done a great job making them really interesting compositions, but the way you've done the linework +flat color looks really awesome. I think over the semester it's been really cool to see how you've used digital media to create your work and there's always an element of this swift, dynamic movement. I just wanted to let you know that I'm impressed by how gestural these are and that I think they'd be a wonderful series to continue if you thought you'd like to add more food illustration or iconic illustration to your portfolio. Definitely worth doing again!
