Patterns

Untitled-7 Untitled-8 fancy-pattern-format My patterns don't really work together color wise, but I went along with the same theme. My first pattern is the one with the goat skull in it. I had made in a different class. I wanted to redo it now that I had finished my freshman year and stuff. PROGRESS! But I made the second pattern because I wanted to make a more organized pattern to put up on the blog here.

  1. These icons you made are pretty cool, and the hand-drawn quality to the lines really adds to the look of them. There is a decent amount of tracking going on in the top/bottom ones, primarily because of that solid dark tombstone. Maybe it would help to keep the viewer's eyes off of it more if it was lineart like some of the other icons? That might help unify the pattern a bit more.

  2. The top pattern looks really nice! I think there are a couple of things you could do to make it better - one thing is maybe there is a way to change the size of the tombstone a bit to take care of the tracking - or maybe you could add some color into the inside of some of the other elements? I like the linework of the eye and the other pieces, but because the tombstone is so dark, I was looking for another dark spot in the ddesign to help coordinate with it! I like the themes, too - one thing that you could try with the goat skull one is to show us a bit more of the pattern, it's a bit hard to see right now as a pattern because you can't tell where it repeats? I think you could put it in the template so it'll be easy to see how they go together a bit more. I think your hand drawn look makes sense together so they relate more than you might think they do - but the color might also be something you can switch up with the goat skull to make it harmonize a bit. The themes make sense together, too. I would try one more thing with the skull one to make it a more even texture - try using another option (like, for example, the brick by row option in the pattern tool) that might be able to offset the big skull - see how it works with it being offset - it might be nice.

  3. I like the subdued neon colors of the objects from the first pattern and the more visceral linework of the second one is interesting to see. However, there's a lot of tracking going on (that tombstone and the bone are the culprits) that kinda distracts from both pieces. I also think there's a bit of disunity between the two patterns - I don't think I'd recognize them from the same set if they weren't presented together in the same blog post. Maybe a bit more visual refinement and piece adjusting could do a lot for these patterns.

  4. I really like both of your patterns. Not as a set, but they do do well by themselves. I wish I could see a bigger section of the second pattern to see how it repeats, but it doesn't look like it has anything that would really stick out. The pattern with the tombstone with the green background is probably my favorite, I think it coordinates nicely.

  5. I think you could improve the tracking problem by simply putting less of the tomb stones in the original swatch, and making some turned the opposite way, by reflecting the image. I also think these patterns have the potential to go together in a set, which could easily be done through some quick color changes. Contrasting your death/ ram skull pattern with the bright neon colors of the second one could actually look really interesting.

  6. I really enjoy both of your pattern! They both almost seem like opposites in a way one is really playful and vibrant and the other is really dark. I think that if you wanted to them to look as a set it could be a quick easy fix by adjusting one of the color palettes to match the other! Otherwise nice work!

  7. Oooh, super spooky. I like the hand drawn quality of these patterns. Your color palette is interesting, because it doesn't fit with most of the icons, but somehow it all works. There seems to be a bit of striping or whatever it's called with the tombstone, so if that was fixed it would look great.

  8. I definitely prefer the white background to the color for your first pattern. Both work well, but the white brings out more of the colors of your icons. Your coordinate pattern could also act as a main pattern, I think! I would bring some of the bright colors you have in your first to your second one.
