illustrator layering project

i had some difficulties just navigating illustrator because it's a new program that I'm not quite sure i like yet. but i think the layering technique is something that i could really get used to. changing opacities and putting two different colors together that can vibrate (i.e. a reddish gray next to a greenish gray) is something that i am definitely interested in. i think that i could see myself spending a lot of time layering until it's perfect, but i think i also like to see the process of layering the colors and viewing the image from far away. this is why i chose not to go too far in-depth with smoothing out the variation in color. this lends itself to my painting style which allows the brushstrokes to come through, and bring out color relationships.

  1. I think you've done a great job getting the nuances of color using the transparency effect. I especially like it in the cheek, where, when I squint, I can see the same kind of value throughout the illustrator piece that you used in the painting. It's interesting that you were also able to achieve a very painterly look with illustrator using the transparency / opacity, because often, people have very flat looking imagery. We haven't talked about it yet, but there are some ways that we can also help to soften the edges (filter>blur>gaussian blur) -- which will also be really nice if you want the edges to blend a little bit more.

One thing that might be kind of nice to try is to get some of those halos that are around the outer edge of your work, like on the bridge of the nose, with a very slight gradient -- maybe just to show the transition into the background, and maybe even some in the hair. Even the dark spot that is underneath the nose would be a great place to add a bit more color shift, as you've done a great job on the figure. I'd also erase the painting from underneath so you can see what the full thing looks like without it- I see that little piece of painting peeking through and wonder if it would make the piece look different if it wasn't embedded underneath.
Overall i think you did a really nice job with this one - especially with your ability to reproduce the painterly quality. Nice work

  2. I really like how your style comes through in this piece as far as adding the shapes of your brushstrokes. I think taking some time to do the same thing could have made this piece turn into something very busy but at the same time it could also turn out really well.

  3. You can really see all the time and effort you've put into this piece, especially with all of those layers. I think if you were to somehow soften the layers, you could have a really nice blend of colors. Overall though, this was very nicely executed.

  4. There is an impressive amount of layering here, it shows how much time and effort you put into this. I think the layering of color in the face was super effective and works really well. I think adding some subtle tonal changes or shapes in the background would have made this piece even better.

  5. That is a difficult piece to imitate in Illustrator, but I think it was done effectively. The amount of layering in this is crazy, and to manipulate the opacity of all of them creates some really interesting colors across the portrait. The only way I could think to improve this would be to add a canvas texture to the whole image, although I don't know how to go about doing that.

  6. I think this is an absolutely wonderful example of maintaining a painterly stylet/technique through the vectorization process, so kudos for that. If I had to make a suggestion, it would be to attempt to keep the accuracy of the AI shapes compared to the original as theres some phantom colors here and there.

  7. I'm kinda missing that purple stroke on the left in the original. actually there seemed to be a lot more on the shoulder and on the jaw. i do want say though that you did a phenomenal job with this there were a ton of colors and layers in this piece and you handle them well

  8. Out of everyone here I think you did the best job of recreating the brush strokes while still staying true to them. I think the one thing that slipped under the radar was some of the subtle bits in the background- the darker bluish color and those two purple streaks really played to juxtapose the intensely detailed face. All in all though, the piece still shines through and came out great.

  9. i think you did amazingly with this, i don't have any advise to give you except the fact that the major thing that you lost in this piece for me was the canvas texture which is why i still like the original better but that is sort of irrelevant to this particular project so good job!!:)
