sketch movieposterprogress1 movieposterprogress2 movieposterfinal

I decided to recreate a movie poster for Spirited Away. Unfortunately there are a lot of minimalistic renditions of the poster already, so I decided to work with some uncommon imagery since most of the poster depicted characters instead of symbols. From left to right, the symbols are: gold, Zeniba's shikigami, and the gift from the River Spirit. I used both the pen tool and the blob tool, and also warping effects and selections tools to manipulate the shapes. I used a clipping mask for the shikigami and for the background, and looking at it again I think it would also ground the smaller symbols if I added some subtle textures to them too. For those two, I cut out a piece of a pattern I made for the texture project. I had some trouble finding a slug that was high enough quality to stick on the poster and aligning the text, but I've been looking at it for so long it doesn't jump out immediately to me. I may make a few minor changes later!

  1. The simplicity is something I really admire in this piece, like, I think this should be the cover for the Spirited Away DVD or something. The texture really adds a nice clean touch to everything.

I'm having a little trouble reading what the shapes next to the paper bird are. I'm assuming its the little ball from the river spirit and a piece of gold from no face?

Aside from that this is a really nice design.

  2. I'm a sucker for minimalistic movie posters and this piece hits all the right notes for me. I feel the bottom image with the accolades attached and the more subtle background texture is the strongest of the three iterations. Likewise, the textures on the three icons is very nice as well.

I thing the type is simple and strong, fitting well with the bold and fantastical imagery that the movie features. The concept might be a little weaker, but I understand the desire to try something different in the face of a lot of other minimalistic takes on this movie. Overall, the entire piece is extremely clear. If you decide to make changes to this poster, I'd like to see where what it ends up looking like,

  3. I think just as someone who's seen the movie, the two sphere simply read as eyes, leading me to believe they're No Face's eyes. However from your description it sounds like that's not what you intended and that creates a bit of a disconnect. Great use of textures on the shikigami and the background!

  4. So great. I love how simple this is. the textures are perfect. the colors are perfect. Lovely. Although I really really really love the font from the original poster, it would be cool to see a font that you made yourself too, as a contrast.

  5. The simplicity in your posters are beautiful. It's been too long since I've seen Spirited Away, but I can tell that the imagery you have used are meaningful to the film and in a way, the paper-cut pieces and dark textured background makes me contemplate what significance they might hold for the story. I by far prefer the background in the second one, as it draws attention to the shapes themselves. Simple and elegant compositions. Your work plays really well with Miyazaki's way of storytelling.

  6. I really like minimalistic movie covers because they remind me of book covers. They just seem more elegant. This one uses three simple symbols to represent the movie and you did a wonderful job at that. I can't decide which one I prefer, the paper background or the stars (water reflections?). The star one seems a little too opaque, so maybe "dimming" them down would work better. Great job.

  7. This poster is very enjoyable to me. I really like minimalist posters and this being one of my favorite films I feel that you were very successful in depicting the movie. Your use of textures and color work well with the overall tone for the poster.

  8. The use of texture here is really pleasing to me, especially on the gold. Despite there being really no defined outline, the subtle implied outline really defines the piece. The other textures work really well too, it doesn't feel as if one is overpowering any of the others. I'd say this is a really nice take on a minimalistic design.

  10. Great textures in this piece - I think the way you embellished on the background "paper" texture is really nice and helps the minimal quality of the poster a lot. I think it's also nice to see the organic textures come into the colorful spaces and cut through them. The bottom one (which I am assuming is the final one) is nicely harmonized as well with the way that you've used the final overlay of texture - the colors look more unified because of them, too. One thing you could try is just scaling EVERYTHING down a bit so the poster, if it was in real-scale- would have a bit more space around everything. The reason I say that is because there is a lot of great space up at he top half of the poster, and I think that if the elements had a bit more space, you would have an even more convincingly minimal look to it - poster style. Great choice for a secondary type color (gold) - I think it's a nice touch to tie in the gold from above but doesn't distract from the title.
