process photos:
Soooo I thought that I would hate illustrator so much that it would probably make me cry, but I haven't shed any tears yet and that's pretty great.
Mostly for this illustration, I did a lot of layers... like... A LOT.
The background was probably the most difficult part because I was dealing with texture and that process is difficult for me. I found some cloud images off of the internet (www.freeimages.com), changed it into a bitmap on photoshop, then imported it into illustrator and then played around with using "image trace" and layering different versions on top of each other. The huge amount of colored lines were image-traced and reflected upon each other.
For the big crescent moon shape, I made a whole bunch of transparent, different colored moon-shapes and layered them together. Then, I used pathfinder>divide and it made this weird, explosion shape. I took a big version of the original moon shape, and did a clipping mask over it.
For the more graphic shapes like the compact and the crystal rose, I used the pen tool and layered and layered and layered.
I really liked the process and yes, it was difficult because this required a lot of patience, but I think the most difficult part was figuring out the text. I'm not sure if it works completely.
also, I listened to this while making it!

This is actually so cool and well thought out. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteI think the only thing I would change with this is that the little circle shape in the middle is off center just a tiny bit.
I can tell you put a ton of time into this! Keep up the awesome work!
The colorful crystallization effect in the moon and the fragmenting shards on the rose are wonderful to look at. Your efforts have surely made this piece shine, and it is looking very professional! The type is fun as well, with the inclusion of the little moon logo. Not sure how I feel a bout the dark line under the subtitle, it breaks up all of your great work and I think I would prefer the poster without it. The imagery and detail is awesome, I could probably look at it for hours.
ReplyDeletei really like the colors you used for this i think they all go together very nicely. i can tell you put in a lot of work and time to get the textures and colorfulness that you achieved. the only thing i think could be improved a little is making the light coming off of the crystals a little brighter because i didnt even notice it at first because of how intricate and colorful this is.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow. There are some impeccably executed details in your poster as a result of using image trace - it wasn't a tool that occurred to me to use while making my poster, so I'm excited to see it used in this one! The graphic style you went for is really working for the image as a whole, and I especially love the colors you chose (it's probably the most eye-catching thing about the poster). Just a couple of technical decisions I would like to point out: The title seems a little bit too far up, and I wonder how'd it look if it was knocked down some notches so there's some space between it and the top of the poster. The second thing that jumps out to me is the rendition of the compact - the style choice differs from the graphic quality you were going for, and it's slightly distracting. Maybe getting rid of the black lines around the yellow part would help, since there's a lack of lines everywhere else in the piece.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Dig the music!
I really like the color scheme in this as well as the use of layers. The crescent shape is very intriguing and I didn't even notice the fragmented rose at first. The amount of layers shows you put in a lot of time and it turned out well.
ReplyDeleteJEALOUS. Joking aside, this is superb- the colors and graphics used really evoke that cool 80's "This is what the future would look like" retro imagery. It goes without saying you knocked the textures right out of the park.
ReplyDeleteThe issue that comes to mind is how the text seems like something of an afterthought- you have this truly captivating kaleidoscope of colors, but then the title and logo feel incredibly plain in contrast, and so they wind up lost in the rest of the colors.
A small blip on the radar, however- you have nothing to worry about. It's fantastic.
I like your poster. You did an incredible work with the clouds . The colors are really vibrant, it will be really interesting to see this work print with fluorescent colors. I think for the type you are using Gill Sans, that's reminds a lot of the poster of 2001 space odyssey by Stanley Kubrick. The only think that I don't like is the main title "Promise of the rose" inside that grey box is to much static compare to the rest of your poster.
ReplyDeleteI think this looks really nice and you've done a really great job integrating the piece in the back with the illustrated pieces in the front of the poster. One thing that I like a lot is that you added more texture to the glow that is surrounding the rose - I think that you could even let some of hte background sort of cut in to this shape -- whether it is just slicing it up a little to break up the red shape a tiny bit, or maybe it's just a lighter color that sneaks in. Where you have those points on the inside looks great - just because it's that reiteration of shape appearing a second time (it appears first in the background) -- and it brings the piece together more. I think it might also be nice to revisit the small emblem at the bottom so that it also feels a bit more integrated. I think it's just because it's drawn in a much more flat way -- is there a way to stylize it a little so that there are some more lines that are included? Or something like that? Maybe it's just adding a difference in how the color is placed, too -- I think it's just because it's rendered in such a different way than the rest of the piece (much more flat?). But, overall, I am also glad that you payed a lot of attention to the way that the colors create a hierarchy of where you look, and that you also included the bottom text in an announcement fashion, which is nice. The last thing I think you could do is maybe move the larger text (title) down a bit so it has more room between it's placement and the edge of the colored area. I think changing the scale might help, too - maybe a bit smaller, with the secondary title smaller as well, without the grey bar... Just because the imagery at the bottom is almost hte same size as the type, and if the type was smaller, you'd be able to have a more clear hierarchy of where to look first. Nice work.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! This is really amazing, your use of graphics as well as colors was done very well and greatly emphasize this piece. I liked how you used the image trace tool to create some of the texture within your piece. I think it might be fun to play around with the logo along with the title they seem a little flat compared to the rest of the poster. Other then that great job!
ReplyDeleteI love this poster and the graphic elements of it. The only thing I would change would be the typography of the piece. I think you should explore other fonts and because the piece is already so colorful already, giving a little breathing room for the info would be best with a white font. I would also maybe get rid of the gray box that's with "promise of the rose", it just reminds me of snapchat.
ReplyDeleteVery nice! There's so many things to say about this piece. I love the ingenuity behind using a cloud texture as a live-trace wireframe. While the poster doesn't really seem 'Sailor Moon' to me, I don't think that takes away from my enjoyment of the piece. The coloring work and the rendering on the crystal is phenomenal. Fitting the slug outside of the main picture was a good design choice too.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to make a suggestion, it would be maybe change the spacing on the movie's subtitle and maybe revisit the rending on the the locket so that it meshes a bit more with the rest of the poster.
