Assignment #1

Digitalartillustrator1v2 holidayillustratorsniporiginal I used the pen tool and the eyedropper tool for the most part to get the same colors as the original. I had some trouble using this program as I don't normally use a layering method. It definitely took a lot longer than it should have, but I think I have a better grasp of Illustrator than I did last week.

  1. I like the colors in this one, and the way the shapes actually feel voluminous because of the different layers working together. I feel like the sky looks a bit flat compared to the foreground, but all together it's a very nice redraw.

  2. I think that working with the background of this piece by adding in the shapes of the brushstrokes would look really cool, it would be super tedious but it might be worth it.

  3. The colors are great! I think one of the funny side effects of it being remade in Illustrator is the clean, texture-less shapes give it the appearance of candy.

The only real inconsistency I've noticed that the pink in the tree to the far right seems rather muted. The topmost segment has that noticeable pink there, but the areas below are much softer. It doesn't do any harm in it's own right but I feel there was an opportunity to make it pop out more.

  4. I really enjoy the colors in this paint and I'm glad they nicely transferred over into the vector art. You were able to use the pen tool to capture the shape of the trees from the original successfully, although if I hadn't seen the original first it would have taken me a bit to see that the trees weren't giant globs of ice-cream. I would suggest using more layers of color around the highlights of the tree branches to give them a sense of depth.

  5. I like how this turned out-- it looks like an abstract form from the way that it is cropped and without the texture surfacing from the first one. I actually would have liked to have seen at least /some/ areas where you tried to stay true to the texture of the first illustration. Maybe using more layers and overlapping a lot more would help you do that.

  6. I like how the semi-abstract piece takes on an entirely different feel in the redrawn version; it comes out a lot more playful and cartoonish (in a good way!). Like others have mentioned, it would've been cool to see an attempt at replicating the texture of the original piece, but I feel the vectorized version stands on its own as well.

  7. I agree with some of the other comments regarding the background, I think it would definitely benefit the piece to add some subtle shapes reflecting the different colors used in the painting. Aside from that, I think the flatness of the illustrator version gives the piece a pleasant cleanliness that would fit on any given postcard or poster.

  8. i think this turned out pretty good but i think maybe you could have pushed it a little further and pointed out a few more of the color changes especially in the sky and the tree in the background.

  9. I also agree with adding more shapes to the background! There are areas where more layering could have happened, but either way I really dig the bulbous and organic shapes going on - you used the pen tool pretty skillfully with it. The color palette is also pretty eye-catching, great choice.

  10. I think you picked a challenging piece to recreate for this project! One thing that I think you did a great job in is picking the local colors- I think if you were able to try to use a couple opacity changes between colors, you could maybe get the same kind of gradiated looks to the way the paint changes color in the original. There is also a new tool that we haven't used yet, but in the future it might be helpful for things like this! On the right hand side of the Illustrator interface is a fly out menu that has a black to white gradient - this tool lets you actually make gradients between colors really easily and might be helpful! Still - I think you did a good job getting the bigger shapes together and maybe with the addition of a couple smaller marks to make it look more like the painted effect in the original, it could have a bit more of the detail that you have in the original. Definitely playing with opacity between colors would be a great way to add some more subtle color shifts!
