lasiurus borealis

vampyrum spectrum

I loved creating these two bats and playing with texture. I really wanted to get the wooly, fuzzy texture of their fur, but also show how they are different types of fur in each bat. The first bat, an eastern red bat has thick, golden fur, but is very soft. The vampyrum spectrum, the second bat, has a lot more of a bristly texture in it's fur, and his huge leaf-nose is snarly and kind of bulbous. I had trouble figuring out the method of applying texture, but I think I got the hang of it.

  1. The texture use in this is really great! The subtle layers in the first bat add a nice touch, but the creative take on the second bat's skin and nose are very interesting. The colors are simplistic but work well together. I'm glad you decided to branch out into using your own textures rather than the class provided ones, the ones you have chosen compliment your artwork wonderfully.

  2. I love these so much. I want them as buttons or badges for a jacket. The color palette for both of them is just great and I like how you did your research on the characteristics of the bats and incorporated them into the final image. The top one is my favorite, mostly because of the colors you used, but also because it looks grumpy. You really seem to have a good understanding of Illustrator. Great job.

  3. You did an awesome job applying textures to this - not only because the shapes are really well defined (with the way you created the original masks) but also in the textures you chose for different areas. One thing that makes it so successful is the fact that you used tonal textures like - on the lower bat's face, to do pink on pink, or brown on brown - and this helps the image not to become too crazy with the different textures applied. It works really well in both of the bats - in fact, I think that one of my favorite applied textures is the one that is in the black areas around the lower bat's eyes - and the texture inside the yellow bat's ears. It's a really nice graphic texture, but it reminds me of the folds inside their ears - and the skin around their eyes, but a really stylized version! Great job on these!

  4. Both of these are really great, the textures used in the second one are really interesting and dynamic, but the subtlety in the first one I think is really successful. Especially with the texture in his ears.

  5. i think these are super cool and i like that you used prior knowledge or research to make sure the bats textures would be similar to how they are in real life. i think the textures you chose look great in the places you put them. i also love the expression on the first one!

  6. Interesting incorporation of research (or innate knowledge) to inform which textures to use, I respect that level of thought. The color scheme for the eastern red bat is beautiful and the use of the subtle lavender color really makes it vibrate. The texture in the nose of the bottom one was also a very interesting choice that I think works well. The texture around the eyes on the bottom one does cause the eyes themselves to recede a bit, but maybe a stroke or adding a slight shine to them would help bring those out. Fantastic job overall!

  7. I really love the yellow bat and the texture used on the majority of its fur. I think the colors and textures play really well here, and the symmetry of the piece is very appealing. You have a very nice balance of subtle textures and stark geometric prints.

  8. I think the first bat is definitely the most successful out of the two in terms of color choice and cohesiveness. They're both wonderfully executed, but I'm not certain if head texture or the ear placements on the second one ends up causing some spatial issues (It just be me, to be honest!). The textures, however, work together well and even with so much variety between them they don't end up being too overworked or distracting - Good job!

  9. Absolutely digging the second bat and I kinda want it on a shirt. However, maybe on the first one the main fur texture is a little too subtle? Its a little hard to pick out.
