Assignment 1: Illustrator Re-Draw

Square Before

Square After

I hadn't done anything with Illustrator before this assignment really, so my only frame of reference for this drawing was a bit of dabbling into Photoshop. Although I was off to a really rough start, I eventually learned how to properly use the pen tool after a couple hours of struggling. I had some problems placing the layers in the proper order, or shapes being drawn on the wrong layer, but thanks to Google I was able to troubleshoot my problems pretty quickly. All in all, I'd actually say I enjoyed this assignment.I used the pen tool, with the smooth tool over most of my lines.

  1. You can see all the time you put into this, it turned out really nice! Its crazy that you don't have much experience with illustrator or photoshop and that your first try turned out so good!
I think the shadowing on the face around where the cheek bones would be could maybe use some more color layering with different some different opacity

  2. A great example of simplicity making for a strong image- asides from some of the textures that come from the watercolor (well, I'm guessing the original is watercolor, right?)medium they really match up. You did a good job getting the colors near identical and I'm impressed with how well the eye turned out. I think all it's missing is one lighter tone- there is a paleness to the original that isn't quite as present in the remake. Otherwise, great!

  3. This is a really nice piece and I like the way you translated it into illustrator. It still retains all the bold graphic qualities it had before. I wonder though if you could have dropped the opacity in the shadow that overlaps that runs next to the eye. Overall good stuff!

  4. I really love how this turned out. Its super impressive that this is your first time working with illustrator. I think I actually like the remade version almost better than the original. I do think that you could have even gone further with the tones in the face with some different opacities like anne said, but I think this is great either way.

  5. Everything looks really clean and represents the ink drawing accurately. The shape of that eyebrow looks like it was a brush stroke. The range of grays creates the satisfying amount of contrast that was in the original work. The only advice I could give is the shading around the eye and cheek bone could benefit from toying with the opacity of each layer just a small amount.

  6. The linework of the eye is gorgeous, and somewhat reminiscent of Lichtenstein-esque pop art. I think giving the piece a more graphic, blocky feel actually helps it in that way.

You might want to try playing with the opacity a bit more and blending things in order to get the inky textures and subtleties of the original, if that's what you're interested in going for.

  7. This turned out perfectly especially for not having used the program before. i think i might say that i like the new version more than the original because the line work looks so clean and it really pops.

  8. Although you say this is your first time in illustrator, I think that this piece turned out extremely well! I feel like you were able to effectively transfer all of the lights and darks of the original into the new one effectively! I really enjoy the use of grays as well as how accurate you were able to re-create the new one!

  9. Your rendition of your original in Illustrator is almost identical, and it really shows that you were able to get a good understanding of Illustrator (even if with all the difficulty)! The only part that is particularly distracting are the shadows under her eyebrow and at her browbone. I think the opacities and colors here can mesh a bit more than they currently are, but otherwise this is a successful first piece.

  10. You did an incredible job with this one. I think that you picked a piece that really helps with the translation as well - the crisp lines that you made around the eyebrow an the hatching in the face work really well with the tools that you used and I think that overall you did a great job representing this one in Illustrator. One thing that I also think you did a great job on is the subtle overlap in the shapes near the eye - and I think you could even push that more if you wanted it to look like the original even more - maybe playing with the opacity of a couple smaller layers would let you have the painterly feeling to it. One more thing - now that we know about the custom brushes, you might be able to add an edge to some of these shapes to get that human quality to them if you'd like. Really nice job on this.
