I primarily used the pen tool in remaking this piece. In order to make the line appear wavy like the original marker strokes I distorted the line with the roughen effect. I had a little bit of trouble trying to represent the water color in Illustrator. I played with the transparency of each layer of color to try to show a layering effect that watercolor does. In order to get the same color the eye dropper tool was used consistently with slight manipulation to get a easily seen color.
I really liked how you were able to transfer those tones of watercolor from your original drawing to your second one. I like how you were able to efficiently display that effect from your original by effectively layering those planes of color.
ReplyDeleteThe texture of the lines in this piece are definitely comparable to the original line work. You seem to have a good grasp on Illustrator and getting the effects you want. I would love to see this redraw with a watercolor-like texture used for the colors.
ReplyDeleteI can tell that this must have been a hard piece to transfer over into illustrator. I think you did a great job with the line work, and getting it close to the original textures you worked with.
ReplyDeleteThe way you recreated the watercolor texture turned out really sweet, I think it actually looks better than the original because of the depth that was created by layering all the blues on the top of the birds head and by its cheeks
ReplyDeleteNice work creating that watercolor effect digitally. I can imagine it is not an easy task to pull off. I love the colors, particularly in the Illustrator version, since the hues are bit more saturated, but that is just a personal preference. It's nice to see the playfulness of the line is still captured within the updated piece.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job repeating this piece although i wouldn't quite say thai it looks like watercolor in the remake but i really like the way you handle the color spilling over the outline on the top of the birds head. i think that maybe the outline is a little too wavy on the remake. it seems to vibrate when i look at it and it distracts from the color in the piece especially since the outline is extremely thick to begin with.
ReplyDeleteReally dig how you were able to play with the opacities and the shapes of your washes to create such a strong piece in Illustrator. I'd love to see you play with the opacities and overlappings of those shapes more.
ReplyDeleteBoth versions are pretty fantastic; the graphic quality of the Illustrator version shows a unique take on the original, and I'm sure conveying the watercolor strokes in Illustrator was a bit of a challenge! The way its rendered is really quite convincing, actually.
ReplyDeleteYou did a really awesome job on recreating this one. One thing I like a lot is that you really have the textural qualities down - you did a great job making the more graphic shapes at the top of the heron's face feel like the original, and you also did a great job on the quality of the linework -- adding a texture to it to make it feel like the original as well. One thing that I really like about this piece is that you really thought about the subtle color shifts and applied them with the shapes you made. Maybe even some use of the opacity slider would help you get some of the transparent looks as well. This was a really great piece to use for this project. Great job.
