300 Movie Poster
Forms simplified from the original sketch.
Started with a dark background and scrapped it in favor of a lighter one.
2 different textures for the shields and capes.
Since we only had a week to complete a full-sized movie poster, I had to sit myself down and decide how to manage my time before starting. At first it was a challenge for me, simplifying my shapes while attempting to retain dynamism in the figures. The use of simple shapes allowed me to get away with utilizing shape tools wherever they fit—along with the blob brush(which I had a ton of fun using, and messing around with both that and the eraser tool made me wish I knew how to use them properly beforehand) and limited use of the pen tool, I messed with the ellipse, rectangle, and star tools. No heavy experimenting with textures this time around, but those splatter textures sure came in handy.

I really enjoy your use of shape here, especially the way the shapes create their own boundaries, instead of relying on line work. I think maybe this poster could have used some more texture, but the textures you did use worked out nicely. The text at the bottom is a bit hard to read, but that may simply be due to the grey text overlapping the spear and cape. All in all it's a very well executed illustration.
ReplyDeleteI love your use of texture in this. Although it's really minimalistic, the use of the textures depict the content and violence of the movie well. I'm glad you didn't stick with the flat version of this because now it has a lot more tension, action and movement in it.
ReplyDeleteThis is cool, but it looks a lot like the original poster for 300, so I dunno how I feel about that. Otherwise, I absolutely LOVE the textures. It's simple and also complex. You really chose the correct textures for the shields and things. They look worn and well-used.
ReplyDeleteI really like your use of simple textures. The metal on the shields looks very nice. Also the spears in the background remind me of classic Disney backgrounds for some reason. Like a fence or something. The blood splatters were placed in a way that decorated the edge of the poster, but didn't distract from the center.
ReplyDeleteThis looks really slick- I mean that in the "it's cool" way, not the "a slug just did a triathlon on it" literal sort of slick. The flowing forms of the figures punctuated by the rough splattered blood really completes the image. There isn't a lot that I can really gripe about - perhaps pronounce the text on the bottom a bit more (the black just recedes into the image so it proves hard to read) but otherwise you aced it. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI'm really fond of how animated your characters are, it gives the piece a great forward momentum and energy. I think the choice to lighten the background really worked out in your favor, and actually represents the film better too. The one thing I would change is just that I might have made the title a little bit bigger, so that it would be more eye-catching and also fill up some of that negative space.
ReplyDeleteThe shapes of this are so interesting! Especially the background shields behind the main three spartans. I also love the atmospheric perspective that happens as the spartans recede into the distance. Your textures are also incredibly solid. The only thing that seems to jump out to me is that the two spartans in the back don't seem to have enough room to breath compared to the two in the front.
ReplyDeleteawesome texture usage. great composition. nice colors. the only thing i can say is that the characters in this movie are super tone and buff and maybe a little play with the muscle structure could have been messed with but then again it is also totally unnecessary . great job!
ReplyDeleteAll the textures and movement really work well together in this and your color scheme is really calming compared to the movies intense saturation.
ReplyDeleteI think it might have been cool to try using different fonts instead of just the original 300 font, maybe going for something that looked a little more focused on the other parts of your piece like all your clean shapes. Using a skinny blocky kind of font might look nice as far as design goes.
this is so dynamic! great use of splatter textures, and composition. over all this a great piece i just wish that maybe you did something else with 300 title, the title l doesn't really suit the rest of the poster's 2d cut paper look.
ReplyDeleteYou did a really great job making something that feels cohesive - the textures are really nice additions to the more graphic shapes, and helps the splatter feel like it's really a part of the design. I also think that you did a great job incorporating the title - it's different than a lot of other designs we've seen in this group's posters, and I think it's nice to offset the rest of the imagery below. I also think that you chose colors that fit well with the design, and it I think the stained paper in the background actually ads a bit of atmosphere - it makes it feel like there is more energy.
ReplyDeleteI think you might be able to tone down the saturation of the skin tones a bit, maybe just see if you could do a neutral overlay (using the transparency menu at, maybe 10 percent or something?) one of the options in that menu might be nice -- maybe the hue option? It you might have to see if that one helps unify colors -- The reason I say this is because it'll help bring a tiny bit of unity to the bight colors, while still letting them be powerful. The composition works really well, too - Really dynamic.
