Calvin Bauer Illustrator Practice

pentool Cropped Illustration I used the pen tool to recreate this image, which was relatively simple seeing as most of the shapes are geometric and simple blocks. I actually lost my progress halfway through it and had to restart, so it was a tad more rushed than I would've liked, and the illustration itself wasn't finished so it's also a bit plain. I've used the pen tool before, which made the process a little less tedious, but I haven't used it for years so it was still a bit of a learning experience.

  1. The linework and colors on the redraw fit well with your original drawing. I think the geometry of the piece is really interesting, and playing with the thickness of your lines, as well as their shape, might really help to emphasize that.

  2. Although the images are both same I like how your use of geometric shapes and lines recreated your piece in a different light. I feel that your use of those shapes and lines were used very effectively in recreating your piece!

  3. I’m a fan of how faithful the vectorized version is to the original drawing and its obvious there was careful attention paid to the details. Like the post above mine (or a few above mine) mentioned, I think varying width within the individual lines themselves would look very nice if you ever chose to revisit the piece.

  4. I like the illustrator version of your piece even better than the original! There is however some wonkiness with the hierarchy of your line weights. There's some lines in the foreground that are far thinner than lines farther back in space that tricks the eye. But overall RAD work!

  5. You did a great job in recreating the image. One thing that bothers me a bit are the black outlines on some of the shapes between shadow and highlights.

  6. I actually really like the redrawn version of this. I think the solid blocks of color work really well and it looks very clean. I think the line weight in the original is the only thing I miss in the illustrator version, other than that this turned out awesome.

  7. To be honest guys, I totally forgot how to vary the line widths in illustrator (other than just the stroke size) after I left class. I knew that's what it needed and that the preset line weights are super chunky, and I probably should've just googled it, but alas...

  8. I think that the re draw of this is really sweet cause a lot areas got cleaned up. Keeping some of the messier lines in the re draw was a good choice because it helps maintain some of the depth from the original piece.
