Anne Lehman monster practice thing

I will admit that I didn't spend as much time on this as I would have liked to, I had a lot of trouble working with illustrator during the last class because the program was acting up. What I have here is what I got done on that day. I used the pencil tool and the color picker tool for the most part.

  1. I initially had this same problem with the white not wanting to separate from the textures! Make sure when you use Image Trace, to choose the 2 or 3 color option or it might not be as clean as you would like. Definitely try playing around with more options, it's a good start to experimentation!

  2. The selections around the black squiggly textures could probably be cleaned up so no white is shown, and maybe using those lines more selectively would have helped the overall look and depth of the piece. I do like the purple/green color scheme though.

  3. The colors of this piece work really nicely together, and even in the piece's simplicity I can definitely see your style in it. This looks to be a bear head, or something similar to me, but I could be wrong. I would maybe just try to make the outline shape more defined next time to really get the correct image across to the viewer. Still a good practice image though.

  4. I think that the color palette of this piece is really great! I also really enjoy the simplicity of this illustration. The head of the monster looks similar to a bear, but I like how you were able to use textures to emphasize the piece in a different light. I think that this is a great practice image and it can only get better!

  5. I like your colors on this. They totally remind me of my friend Brando's recent color schemes. http://brandohughes.com/ Hopefully you can get that programs shiz figured out soon. :(

  6. I'm disappointed that you didn't finish! It would have been cool to at least see some features. Maybe some crazy eyes or a huge nose. I like the odd texture you have because it's spaced out, and not too busy.

  7. I'm enjoying the colors you have going on, but I definitely think this could use more shapes in the face or maybe add more to create a body. I highly recommend the Polygon tool, and there's tons of tutorial online that show how to use them!

  8. I can help you figure out these things! Maybe next class I can sit down with yo and we can go through some of the things again so you can feel a little bit better! One thing that would help would be to try and use livetrace with limited colors - maybe on the 3 color mode. The other thing that I can help you with is getting the hang of the pen tool. It's pretty frustrating, i know. Hopefully the blob brush will make thigns a little easier, too - since it automatically makes solid shapes and you don't have to worry about there being an open shapes that end up making it hard to do clipping masks.
I think that you're getting the hang of it -- but it would be nice for you to practice something with a little more detail - I'm excited to see what you do for the poster design. I'm sure that it'll feel a little better with some practice on that piece! Good luck and let me know how I can help! I'll check in with you next time, too!
