Corel Portraits

tzabel portrait2tzabel portrait 3

Between painting these two, I found not long into the process that I definitely prefer dry medium. As you can see from the first half of the progress on the woman with the green background, I began it with Conte brushes, so it’s more of a mix between the two than purely wet materials. These two are based on a mix of fashion photography and to an extent, game characters. Props to anyone who knows who they are based on.

For the first one, I painted directly on top of the sketch with a big blob of color, but for the second one, I tried blending the sketch into the painting as I went.

I find dry medium a lot easier to blend with and achieve the color variations I like. I’m not painterly enough to make impasto look decent.

Scrapped my original idea while we were working, so I made this quick little guy before class was over...

tzabel photobash5 This is a really great way to make quick, easy backgrounds! I will have to use this method in the future. Also messed around with one of those fun little leaf brushes we learned how to make in class last week.

In-class paint. When I don’t know what to do I tend to freeze up, just sketch lines and see what happens. It’s a bad habit, I know… Here’s my in-class speed paint. I forgot to take screencaps so… just went back to take shots of different layers visible, I suppose.

Outside of class I had more time to think up an idea before setting the timer. Sketched a dude, plopped down some color and had fun. I am in love with Kyle’s brush sets!

A card made for a friend. The scan was a little bit lopsided, a few obvious lining mistakes left untouched from when I couldn’t find the whiteout, and some specks of dust were fixed with the spot healing tool and some brushwork. I decided to try darkening the linework to black just for fun.

An older drawing I had made on two pieces of paper taped together. Got rid of that gross line, used the Curve function to eliminate some of that noising going on around the lineart, and darkened it slightly.

Confusion with the required dimensions. I ended up making it landscape... oops.

Tzabel Illustrator final Here's my final Illustrator stuff! When making our in-class backgrounds, I did have a bit of trouble with computer slowdowns from Illustrator becoming bogged down with an overusage of Gaussian blurs, so I just kind of tried to get them done without killing my laptop. Out of class, I made sure not to go overboard on blurring, and only use it where the objects most needed them. It's difficult thinking about shapes of color independently from one another, and that's probably one of the biggest challenges when making such a big piece in Illustrator alone.

Pattern project

I decided to play around with pixel sprite work! Here are some animals dressed up in classic RPG-esque costumes. It was difficult to work with a limited color palette. If I had more time, I think I might want to make the characters in pixels as well.

Started with a dark background and scrapped it in favor of a lighter one.

Since we only had a week to complete a full-sized movie poster, I had to sit myself down and decide how to manage my time before starting. At first it was a challenge for me, simplifying my shapes while attempting to retain dynamism in the figures. The use of simple shapes allowed me to get away with utilizing shape tools wherever they fit—along with the blob brush(which I had a ton of fun using, and messing around with both that and the eraser tool made me wish I knew how to use them properly beforehand) and limited use of the pen tool, I messed with the ellipse, rectangle, and star tools. No heavy experimenting with textures this time around, but those splatter textures sure came in handy.

Clipping masks don't work too well with groups. Trying to put textures on his horns turned out to be a nightmare. Also had a hard time making a background for this guy. I hope it isn't too hard on the eyes. All shapes made with the pen tool.

Illustrator Assignment

TZabel-Illustrator01
TZabel-Illustrator02 Each blob of color became as its own tiny section as I went over it with the pen tool, and layered many of the shapes on top of each other. This ended up eating up many hours of my time, but it was the least problematic method for me. Sometimes this would result in the loss of slight variations of hues, but I found it wasn’t worth taking the extra time to replicate every single shade of color.

Also, if you intend to switch from working on CC to CS6, remember to save it so it is compatible. You will lose the ability to work with all of your previous layers…
