Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 5.29.41 PM Screen Shot 2014-11-02 at 12.58.54 PM Photobash-Version-5 My in-progress shots and final shot of the Photobashing assignment which honestly looks way more traditional than most of my traditional illustration work. I used a lot of the Kyle T. Webster brushes like grain and the sponge brush. I also continuously flattened the layers so that it felt like traditional painting and I couldn't change the undercoats too much. Anyway would love to hear people's thoughts for moving forward.

  1. texture in this piece is very successful. it looks like its 100% just a painting. its hard to tell that its digital which is super cool. i will say that it is sort of hard to tell what is supposed to be going on in the composition but technically i think it was done very well.

  2. I like your idea of having the ship in there. I think that in some ways it isn't as readable as it could be though. Smoothing out the grainy texture in certain areas will allow my eye to move throughout the image. Right now everything is the same texture and so my eye becomes confused as to where each edge is meeting up with another and what is physically in front of what. Adding more contrast to the front would help a lot as well, and making the back a little bit less saturated would help push that part back.

  3. I really love the way you unified the color in the bottom piece! I think that your'e getting a really nice hovering affect with teh ship so far and I think that you could use a bit of adjusting the levels of the ship itself to make it a bit more contrasty would let it stand out more than the background, and bring it onto a different plane! I think that you could also do the opposite and blur out the ground beneath it slightly to get the same effect. Either would do the same thing! But! I think that the painterlyness of this piece is awesome -- and that you did an amazing job making sure that the rest of the image was treated with a similar approach. I really love the textures in this piece. The grittiness ins the sky is also a nice touch!

  4. You did a great job giving it a texture feel- like some of those older paintings you see on display (this sounds incredibly vague on my part but trust me it IS a compliment) . The ship is interesting too- it isn't too defined to the point where it sticks out, but doesn't melt into the backdrop either. My only protest is I'm not entirely certain what is happening in this image and it clearly has a narrative. Is the ship capsized on some rocks? Or is it an airship and those 'waves' are actually steam engine exhaust?

  5. The transformation from the photo pieces to the final product is really amazing! It looks like you created this through traditional painting rather than digital. The cool color palette along with your use of textures really make this piece whole!

  6. I really like your color palette. Those deep blues fit in nicely with the ship. When I saw that second photo where you added the ship right in the middle of the image, I thought "What is he doing?" Then you painted over the whole thing and it turned out great.

  7. I love the textures in this and the painterly quality it has. The colors work well too, although the only thing I'd maybe question is how well the water in the background is working with the rest of the piece. It has a very good atmosphere to it though.

  8. Count me in the crowd that wasn't sure what you were doing but it turned out great! The ship part does look a bit confusing though - is that ship is flying over the rocks? The little white brushwork looks like the steam, and it's slowly careening towards the water - think!
