Final Digital Illustration

I actually lost half my iterative save progress halfway through this portrait so my gif is pretty short. But anyway, this is my wet media portrait of Danny Torence from The Shinning. I still think there are things I need to tweak in this portrait as far as his facial structure and such. I decided I favor dry media over wet just because I find it easier to blend with dry mediums. This is my dry media portrait of Hayley Williams, I don't have any process shots at the moment because my corel expired and I had to do the update for mac and wipe my computer, I have the photos on my harddrive at my apartment. ANYWAY, dry media is easier to blend. I'll fix this post later. Anne is grumpy and tired of technology not working today u___u

  1. I really like the portrait of Hayley Williams and where it's headed. When I blew it up to the larger size it was really nice to see all of the subtle ways that the lighting is achieved with the paint -- around her nose, and chin.. I think you could use one more layer using multiply or overlay, accentuating some of the ways that the face edges turn the corner -- maybe darkening it a tiny bit in some areas or just bumping up the contrast near where her hair comes in front of her face. I think the colors in this one are really nice as well - it's nice seeing that soft pink in the skin tone. I think that if you were to use a secondary color in the one with the little boy -- maybe a bit of yellow in his face and hand (the way you do in the neck) that you could get some really lively coloration into his skin tone. it's getting really close with the addition of the red, but a bit of a yellow might make the red pop out more and the tones will be really lively. Maybe consider doing the same kind of thing (adding a secondary accent color) into the shadows in his clothing, too - so like, maybe a bit of blue into the red of the sleeve, or a bit of red into the blue... sort of just bringing accents into the rest of the single-color pieces the way you are doing it in the face! I really like the smooth quality of Hayley Williams face in the second painting! If you do update these, it'd be really awesome to see where they go from here!

  2. Your facial anatomy and structure is really improving, keep it up. The one of Hayley Williams could definitely use some darker tones to bring a little more form to it, but overall it looks solid. The one of Danny also looks really solid, and I think will look even more so when you define some of those shapes a bit more.

  3. I think you handled the portrait of Danny very well, especially considering children being so difficult to draw. You really captured the expression well. I think just some color correcting on that piece could really bring it to the next level, as the color of his lips seem pretty off to me. ButI love the Hayley Williams portrait!! I swear it's not just that I like Paramore either, it's a great drawing. I think you handled the dry media much better, and all the colors seem to be right were they need to be. I also feel like the dry media portrait figure is framed much more nicely in the piece.

  4. The Hayley Williams one has this hyper smooth quality. It's super interesting but it definitely calls a lot of attention to structure. I think there's a few proportional issues with the eyes and lips that are accentuated by the sharpness of their appearance. I think some minor adjustments or some inbetween space might help them feel a bit more integrated. Ace job for first time in Corel though dude!

  5. The hair on Hayley Williams is wildly awesome! I have to agree that your structural anatomy in these are great, and I can see your improvements with both describing forms and blending color is progressing even between the two pieces. It's really a shame we can't see the gif for the second one! Ah well. Your subtle use of colors is great!
