i used the blob tool and then pen tool to make the shapes, i also used a lot of gradients to create atmospherical effects. i also messed with the blur option in effects.

My pattern followed an urban theme, with the main pattern consisting of stylized trash and the complimentary pattern consisting of high rise buildings. I wanted to go for more of a run down, grungy Hong Kong high rise look in the city pattern, but unfortunately due to time restraints and trying to work within the program it came out a little more sterile and cartoony than I would have liked. I also wanted to make the trash one a little more grungy, but I kind of like the way it came out anyway.
Despite the little hiccups, I think they both came out relatively well individually. I'm not sure how well they work together, and I'm also not sure about the color I used for the purple one. In the city one, there is a strange layering error that I'm trying to get figured out (if you didn't hear me grunting for the first half of class)and I may go back and add color to it at some point.
Here are my two patterns. My original intention was to have a tessellation pattern for the second one, but I was having some issues with illustrator and couldnt finish it, so i took some of those icons and compiled a new pattern. Below I've posted a progress shot of the tessellation pattern so far, and I'll post the finished product when it's done.
I wanted to create a pattern that really gave off a feeling of Spring. I tried to go with the cherry blossom motif and created icons to accompany that. For my second pattern I tried to give the damask pattern a try! I had a lot of fun with this project and I'd like to make more in the future!
