FINAL-dry media-boy form the omen (the first one)

johnson_sarah_omen-damien photo omen_1.gif it was actually really easy to use the dry media tools in corel painter. at first i was a bit worried about how much control i would have with the tools, but i must say that this is deffinitley one of my favorite programs.i started off using the soft pastels and covered the canvas layer in 2 tones then i switched to a hard pastel to block everything. i switched back and forth between hard and soft. and slowly built up the layers

  1. Overall your linework looks really good here- that being said, it doesn't feel finished, at least in respect to coloring. I think this is mostly due to the fact that the Raven/Crow perched on his shoulder is almost identical in color to his hair- I didn't realize he was there until I saw him in the process sketch. Same thing with the background- it's almost the same fleshtone as the boy, so it has a flattening effect. I think if you addressed those two things it would go a long way. But you have a good foundation, the portrait itself looks good- just need to tweak the surrounding elements.

  2. That brush quality is A+. It's not a color palette I would expect, but they totally work. I think making the crow significantly darker and pulling in minor green highlight from his hair into its feathers should differentiate it enough from his hair and make it pop. His fingers don't quite have the same hardness as they did in the sketch - I would go back and block in some colors to rework it again.

  3. I think the color palette on this portrait is really nice! Your use of brushwork is quite amazing as well. It might be fun to play with the color of the crow, you could make it darker and even darker than the tone of the hair to make him stand out. Nice work!

  4. You're playing with some interesting stuff here. I'd just erase that little hand though if you're not planning on further developing it. It feels like it's sitting on top without the definition it needs to feel unified. Love the textural qualities this piece has. Also there's some soft tufts you do in here that are cool, cool, COOL!

  5. I think this one looks like it's almost there -- not quite finished looking, but really close! The reason it might not look totally finished is that some of the edges are so blurred out that it's hard to see where one thing stops and another starts, but that's easily remedied by just adding a bit more contrast between items. One thing that I really like is that you let the color of the paper shine through. I think that you have this really interesting lighting effect happening in the skin tone because of it (which is AWESOME) and you should definitely use this technique elsewhere! I think that the biggest thing to work on for this one is just to make sure that the rest of the piece feels just as rendered as the face. Maybe just more in the hand / or a bit more contrast in the lower left hand corner or something. I think it sort of looks like a shoulder, but then is also the background at the same time!
