This one was done in class as a speedpaint that I finished up during work time. I loooovvved working on it.

Also, this is another painting that I did from life of my friend Kathryn.

Hobbit Portraits

Tauriel

Thranduil

Thranduil_portrait

So I decided to paint Tauriel and Thranduil to get hyped for the new Hobbit movie. I've never painted a person before, and I don't usually draw people, so this took me a while to complete.

I painted Tauriel with the oil brushes first and then later went in with the impasto brushes. At the end I went over the whole thing with the clear varnish brush to get the paint strokes to look more flowing and natural. I found it very difficult to use the wet mediums. It never seemed natural and the blending was very difficult. Because of those reasons I decided to keep the line work and make this one more illustrative. I'm not really happy with the result, but I gained some experience in drawing faces.

I started drawing Thranduil in dry mediums, and after about an hour or two I got used to the program and it felt natural. I started with the 2B pencil for the line sketches and then used the Real Soft Pastel and that's about it. I didn't want to use the blender tools, because I liked how the rough canvas texture looked. I'm really happy with the result of this. It still has some improvements that could be made, but I'm going to leave it for now.

Final Digital Illustration

I actually lost half my iterative save progress halfway through this portrait so my gif is pretty short. But anyway, this is my wet media portrait of Danny Torence from The Shinning. I still think there are things I need to tweak in this portrait as far as his facial structure and such. I decided I favor dry media over wet just because I find it easier to blend with dry mediums. This is my dry media portrait of Hayley Williams, I don't have any process shots at the moment because my corel expired and I had to do the update for mac and wipe my computer, I have the photos on my harddrive at my apartment. ANYWAY, dry media is easier to blend. I'll fix this post later. Anne is grumpy and tired of technology not working today u___u

Final Portraits

rose mcgowan portrait 1
wendyportraitfinal Sorry, I totally didn't do as many saves as I should have. But I picked this up pretty easily, considering how much i've struggled with other programs in this class, Painter is definitely my favorite program of everything we covered. The first portrait I did was of Rose Mcgowan, and the second was of Wendy Torrence(Shelley Duvall) from the Shining. I really loved both mediums we used, but I think painting with the wet media came more naturally to me, probably because this semester I have been painting with traditional oils so it felt pretty familiar.

Final Portraits

FKA twigs // wet media portrait

For my first portrait I chose to do the musician FKA twigs in wet media. I really liked using this medium, although not as much as the dry media (surprisingly). I mainly used the camel brushes, round brushes, a couple blender brushes and the real 2B pencil.

Apolysis // dry media portrait

For my second portrait I did the alternative model Apolysis. I actually really liked using the dry media for this one, although I feel like it is a bit difficult to tell it's dry media because of all the blending; but I guess I'm okay with that. I used the 2B pencil to draw the outline, then the real soft pastel and the round soft pastel to draw the rest of the portrait. I used the detail blender brush to blend everything together, then the square soft pastel to add the squares at the end. Overall. I feel like I greatly improved from my first to my second portrait.

For both of my paintings I attempted to paint Utada Hikaru a Japanese pop idol that is very inspirational to me. For my first one I started out with sketches and and went in with an pastel brush and started painting in flats and once I was happy with that I ended up blending everything together. As for my wet media one I wasn't able to finish it and make it to my liking. I struggled a lot with this one as I'm not too familiar with wet media and still feel like I'm having trouble with the layering affect. I ended up starting over multiple times with this one and was somewhat happy with the progress on this one.

These paintings were a wild ride. I'm really proud of how the pastel dude turned out. I'm a little less enthusiastic about how the lady turned out with the oils. I think if I would have approached it with a different expectation for how it was going to turn out, it might have naturally developed it's own vibe.

In the first image of the gif, I did a super rough sketch. My third really established a stronger sense of weight. The fourth established some blocks of color to build off of. The fifth built up into more established colors and texture and the sixth was the final draft.

Painter Portraits

Painter still feels super clunky to me, but between my first portrait and my second I think I'm making some progess!

Wet Media

These are my zombie portraits, i liked the dry media a lot at first and i thought that the wet was going to be harder but i ended up liking the wet media one a lot more, i used the blending tools a lot for these, i didn't have any references at all for the faces so i just had to make it all up as i went along. i really only used references for the color in the skin.

I used mostly the pastel set of brushes for this painting. First, I started with a pretty bright sketch, figuring out where the dark shapes would be. Then, I tried to figure out where the warm and cool tones were, working loosely and at a small scale so that I can get the basic colors and shape down. Then, I adjusted with a very small size brush, making the portrait more accurate to the photograph. The person in the photograph that I used as reference is somewhat arbitrary, but I wanted to pick a photo that had pretty prominent lighting.

In this portrait, I used the wet brushes. Similar to the first portrait, I worked at a small scale and with a large brush to figure out the space and the color variation of the photo. This portrait was a little bit more difficult because I didn't like the impasto brushes or the oil paint brushes. I tried to figure out the oil paint brushes, but it was so blurry and weird-looking, that I had to stop and go in a different direction. I used the calligraphy pen brush set, and just tried to focus on color mostly, almost like I was using a pallet knife and trying not to blend or smear. It's a different way than I usually work, but I really like how it turned out. I feel like I was channeling some Lucian Freud and Stephanie Pierce.

Between painting these two, I found not long into the process that I definitely prefer dry medium. As you can see from the first half of the progress on the woman with the green background, I began it with Conte brushes, so it’s more of a mix between the two than purely wet materials. These two are based on a mix of fashion photography and to an extent, game characters. Props to anyone who knows who they are based on.

For the first one, I painted directly on top of the sketch with a big blob of color, but for the second one, I tried blending the sketch into the painting as I went.

I find dry medium a lot easier to blend with and achieve the color variations I like. I’m not painterly enough to make impasto look decent.

Female Warriors

These are my two images. They are both strong and fierce female characters from the tv shows Game of Thrones and Vikings. I am drawn to how they both manage to be so strong and independent in the difficult worlds and societies they live in.
Neither of these are done, which is kind of disappointing. I wish I had more time or less work in other classes to complete them, but I am hoping to finish one or both during winer break.
I really don't like the first one I made of daenerys, so I just stopped drawing it and never finished it. The blood texture was hard to replicate and I wasn't a huge fan of the dry medium.
The second one was my favorite, if you couldn't tell by the quality and how much more detail it has. In traditional media, I would choose oil paint, so painting it with wet paints was a blast and I really enjoyed it.

Kakihara Portrait Ichi-1 I did Kakihara and Ichi from the movie Ichi the Killer. Looking back on it I think my first painting actually got worse as it went, I like the sketch way better than the final product. I'm not much of a painter so layering and mixing colors and such were a little tough for me. Also, I'd kind of either stick to one of the tools or use them arbitrarily, and I think that focusing my use and learning more about the specific uses and benefits of each tool would do me a lot of good. Painter is amazing though, I'll probably go back to it eventually.
